How to Paint A Brick Fireplace

Vancouver painters tips on how to paint a brick fireplace

Painting your fireplace is a great way to really transform the look of your home without the commitment of painting your walls. Painting the fireplace requires very little time and effort and can give your home a dramatic transformation. Our Vancouver house painters has put together the following tips on how to paint a brick fireplace:

Like what you do first before painting any portion of the house, make sure that you cover the areas surrounding the fireplace that you do not want to end up picking up paint. Get some dry cloth to cover the floor. Stick blue painter’s tape on the edges of adjoining walls and areas around the fireplace you do not want to have paint.

Once you are finished preparing the surrounding areas of the fireplace and have secured some portions with blue painter’s tape, the next thing that you should do is to use a medium 120-grit sandpaper to lightly sand any loose bits of debris on it. This ensures that you will be painting a smooth surface.

It may be surprising for first timers to discover that mixing warm water and vinegar in a 5 gallon bucket is one of the most effective ways to clean the fireplace before painting it. Make sure that you have a firm brush that you can dip in the solution and then lightly scrub your fireplace using the brush gently; removing dirt, debris, grime, and soot from the red bricks and then let them dry for the meantime.

Apply a thin coat of latex tinted paint primer that is designed for painting brick surfaces and then paint the corners and edges. An angled paint brush is useful in these kinds of areas. Also pour an ample amount of primer into the paint tray and dip a 1 inch paint roller in it and roll it from the top of the fireplace going down. Attach an extension pole to the roller so you can paint the top areas of the brick fireplace and then let it dry. After this, start painting the same way you did with the primer until everything is covered and then let it dry. Apply a second coating and repeat the same procedure.
